Pharm. Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh, PSGH President

In a press release issued today, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) expressed profound concern and unwavering solidarity with individuals displaced due to the recent spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams. The professional association of Pharmacists is taking concrete steps to support ongoing relief efforts for the affected communities.

Immediate Relief Measures:

According to the release signed by the PSGH President and cited by the Apothecary News, The PSGH has taken swift action to provide vital assistance to those affected by the dam spillage:

  • Healthcare Collaboration: PSGH members, especially those from the Volta Regional Branch, have actively collaborated with healthcare professionals, health directorates, and relevant institutions. This coordination ensures that victims receive essential healthcare services promptly.
  • Medicine and Health Product Support: The PSGH is mobilizing its members and pharmaceutical companies to secure crucial medicines and health products. This support aims to complement the ongoing relief efforts, ensuring that medical needs are met.
  • Provision of Relief Essentials: Beyond medical support, the PSGH is extending assistance in the form of relief items. These essentials, including bedding, drinking water, toiletries, detergents, and groceries, will be distributed through official channels to benefit the victims.

Call for a National Emergency Relief and Public Health Fund:

The PSGH has made a strong recommendation to the government and parliament to establish a National Emergency Relief and Public Health Fund. This dedicated fund will provide sustainable support not only for the current disaster’s victims but also for those who may face similar challenges in the future.

To create a strong foundation for the proposed fund, the PSGH suggests considering the existing COVID-19 Fund as the initial seed. The organization emphasizes that this fund should remain separate from the consolidated fund and be exempt from any capping. The PSGH also encourages a coordinated effort to solicit contributions from individuals and corporate entities, augmenting the financial resources of the fund.

Commitment to Support:

The PSGH’s announcement serves as a beacon of hope and collective effort in the face of adversity, demonstrating the unwavering support of the healthcare community for those in need.
