The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has strengthened its engagement with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana (PMAG) as part of efforts to advance local pharmaceutical manufacturing and support the Government’s vision of positioning Ghana as a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub.

A high-level delegation of PSGH, led by its President, Dr. Paul Owusu Donkor, PhD, paid a working visit to the President of Pharmaceutical Manufactureres Association of Ghana (PMAG) and Executive Chairman of the Tobinco Group of Companies, Elder Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin, to discuss opportunities for closer collaboration between the two organisations. The delegation included the Executive Secretary, Rev. Dr. Dennis Sena Awitty; Honorary Treasurer, Dr. Anna Naa Kwarley Quartey, PhD; Deputy Executive Secretary, Dr. (Pharm.) Harry Amoaning Okyere; and Executive Member, Dr. (Pharm.) Lucia Addae.

The visit formed part of PSGH’s strategic priority to intensify advocacy for local pharmaceutical production, recognising its importance to national medicines security, economic growth and sustainable healthcare delivery. Discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between pharmacists and pharmaceutical manufacturers, developing joint advocacy platforms and promoting policies that would stimulate investment in domestic pharmaceutical production. Both organisations emphasised the need for government to create an enabling policy and business environment for local manufacturers, including targeted incentives and measures to improve the competitiveness of Ghanaian pharmaceutical products. They also recognised that reducing the country’s dependence on imported medicines would require stronger partnerships among professional bodies, industry players, policymakers and other stakeholders.

PMAG President pledges support for joint advocacy

Welcoming the delegation, Elder Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin expressed appreciation to the PSGH leadership for the visit and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Society’s advocacy agenda. He welcomed the prospect of closer collaboration between PMAG and PSGH, particularly in creating platforms for sustained engagement with government and other stakeholders on challenges confronting local pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The PMAG President, who also serves as Executive Chairman of the Tobinco Group of Companies, further offered media platforms within the Group to support PSGH in developing dedicated programmes and public education campaigns to promote pharmacy and enhance public appreciation of pharmacists’ contributions to healthcare. The gesture presents an opportunity for PSGH to broaden its media engagement, strengthen the public image of the pharmacy profession and sustain conversations on critical pharmaceutical and public health issues.

PSGH acknowledges Tobinco Group’s support

The PSGH delegation also used the occasion to express appreciation to the Tobinco Group of Companies for its support towards the Society’s recently concluded 90th Anniversary Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Accra. The leadership acknowledged the Group’s contribution to the successful celebration and its continued interest in the advancement of the pharmaceutical profession.

The engagement marks another step in PSGH’s efforts to forge strategic partnerships that translate professional advocacy into tangible national outcomes.
