The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has conferred the distinguished honour of Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (FPSGH) on its immediate past President, Dr. (Pharm.) Samuel Kow Donkoh, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, distinguished professional service and enduring contribution to the advancement of pharmacy in Ghana. The honour was bestowed during the opening ceremony of the Society’s landmark 90th Anniversary Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Accra, a fitting tribute to a leader whose four-year presidency from 2021 to 2025 marked a consequential period of institutional growth, professional advocacy and renewed focus on member welfare.
Fondly associated with the appellation “The Doer,” Dr. Donkoh’s presidency was defined by an emphasis on translating professional aspirations into tangible outcomes. Under his leadership, PSGH significantly advanced the long-awaited Pharmacy Centre project, strengthened welfare systems and introduced an insurance-backed protection scheme for pharmacists and their families. That welfare intervention would become one of the signature legacies of his administration. By July 2025, 63 pharmacists had benefited from the PSGH-GLICO Life Insurance Scheme, with claims exceeding GH¢1.07 million, underscoring the practical impact of reforms introduced during his tenure.
His administration also pursued broader reforms across regulation, professional services, public health and capacity building. These included the establishment of a Regulatory Complaints Desk, advocacy for pharmacist-led vaccination services, the introduction of the My PSGH 360 accountability forum, expanded professional training and mentorship, and renewed efforts to support pharmacist ownership of pharmacies.
A major institutional legacy was the redesign and advancement of the PSGH Pharmacy Centre, conceived as a phased, multipurpose complex comprising a guesthouse, conference facilities and office space, a project intended to strengthen the long-term financial and administrative sustainability of the Society.
Beyond PSGH, Dr. Donkoh has built a career spanning hospital pharmacy, pharmaceutical marketing, multinational pharmaceutical management and entrepreneurship. He spent about a decade with Roche, rising to regional leadership responsibilities across parts of West and Southern Africa, and currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Cedar Point Chemist Limited. He has also led the Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association and the Pharmacy Business Association of Ghana, among several other professional and governance roles.
For PSGH, the conferment was more than an honorary title. Coming at the Society’s 90th anniversary under the theme “Science. Impact. Legacy. 90 Years of Pharmaceutical Excellence,” it represented the profession’s recognition of a chapter of leadership whose imprint can be seen in stronger institutions, expanded welfare, increased advocacy and a more visible role for pharmacists in Ghana’s health system.
Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh now joins the distinguished body of Fellows of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, serving both as recognition of past service and a lasting inscription of his contribution to the Society’s evolving history.
