Excitement is building within Ghana’s pharmacy fraternity following a major announcement made at the second edition of the PSGH President’s flagship engagement series, “Time with the President.” At the event, the president, Pharm. Paul Owusu Donkor, unveiled an ambitious roadmap to mark its 90th anniversary—setting the tone for what promises to be a year-long celebration of impact, innovation, and legacy.

Established on 19th December 1935, the Society clocked 90 years in December last year and has planned out series of activities for commemoration into 2026 with a series of impactful, year-long activities. This vision comes to life with a community launch scheduled for Friday, May 1, 2026. The launch, themed “Pharmacy At Your Doorstep: Touching Lives, Bridging Gaps,” signals a deliberate shift from conventional ceremonies to a people-centred approach that highlights the real-life impact of pharmacy practice.

Taking Pharmacy to the people: a community-centred vision

In a move that highlights its commitment to primary healthcare and community engagement, PSGH has selected Akropong Akuapem as the host community for the grand launch. Located just about an hour’s drive from Accra, the historic town will serve as the backdrop for a vibrant, culture-rich durbar designed to showcase the role of pharmacists beyond the confines of clinics and hospitals.

Far from being a ceremonial gathering, the launch is structured as a full-day immersion into community pharmacy practice. The morning session will see teams of pharmacists engage directly with students and community members through outreach activities across key institutions, including Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, Okuapeman Senior High School, and the historic Presbyterian College of Education Akropong. These engagements will focus on health education, mentorship, and inspiring the next generation to embrace pharmacy and the sciences.

In a further demonstration of its grassroots approach, pharmacists will take to selected community pharmacies to conduct live patient education sessions—bringing pharmaceutical care literally to the doorstep of the people.

A grand cultural durbar to launch a historic milestone

The highlight of the day will be an afternoon durbar, where tradition meets professional excellence in a colourful ceremony officially launching the 90th anniversary celebrations. The event will be graced by the Guest of Honour, Nana Afua Obuo Nketia, whose presence underscores the deep cultural and community ties of the initiative.

In what promises to be a defining moment, the Society will unveil a “10-year prophecy capsule” a forward-looking vision that captures the aspirations of Ghanaian pharmacy over the next decade. This symbolic gesture is expected to outline bold commitments around innovation, access to care, and the future role of pharmacists in national development.

Inspiring the next generation

As part of efforts to engage young minds, PSGH is rolling out a regionally coordinated essay competition for secondary and tertiary institutions across Akuapem. Centered on the theme “The role of the pharmacist in building a healthier Ghana,” the competition will culminate in the awarding of prizes to outstanding students during the durbar.

This initiative not only amplifies the Society’s educational mandate but also aligns with its broader goal of nurturing future leaders in pharmacy and healthcare.

A nationwide movement

Beyond the Akuapem launch, PSGH is extending the initiative across the country, with regional branches expected to replicate similar community-based programmes at dates convenient to them. This decentralized approach transforms the anniversary from a single event into a nationwide movement: one that places communities at the heart of the celebration.

The road to AGM 2026

The community launch marks the beginning of a series of pre-AGM activities leading up to the grand climax in Accra, where the Society’s Annual General Meeting will be held from September 21 to 27, 2026. The week-long AGM is expected to bring together pharmacists from across Ghana and beyond to reflect on the profession’s journey and chart the path forward.

“Science. Impact. Legacy”: A theme that tells a story

At the core of the anniversary celebrations is the overarching theme: “Science. Impact. Legacy.” This triad encapsulates the essence of pharmacy in Ghana over the past nine decades.

“Science” reflects the strong academic and scientific foundation of the profession, from pharmacology to pharmaceutics, and the ongoing need to inspire future generations. “Impact” highlights the tangible benefits pharmacy delivers daily, improving access to medicines, enhancing patient outcomes, and strengthening healthcare systems. “Legacy,” perhaps the most profound pillar, speaks to the enduring contributions of pharmacists beyond healthcare, including policy influence, job creation, and advancements in global health.
