The leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has paid a courtesy call on Professor Christian Agyare, the Vice-Chancellor-designate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to formally congratulate him on his historic appointment and reaffirm the profession’s support as he prepares to assume office.
The visit formed part of a series of engagements by the Society’s leadership in Kumasi ahead of PSGH’s 90th anniversary celebrations and provided an opportunity to celebrate what many within the pharmacy fraternity have described as a landmark achievement for the profession. Leading the delegation was the President of PSGH, Dr. Paul Owusu Donkor, PhD, accompanied by the Vice President, Pharm. Peter Gyamfi; Honorary Treasurer, Pharm. Anna Naa Quarley Quartey; and Chairman of the PSGH 90th Anniversary Planning Committee, Pharm. Kwabena Asante Offei.
They were joined by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of PSGH, Dr. Yaw Duah-Boakye; the Chairperson of Academic, Social & Research Pharmacists Association (ASRPA), Prof. Priscilla Mante; the Chairperson of the Lady Pharmacists Association of Ghana (LAPAG), Prof. Mariam El-Boakye Gyasi; and other senior faculty members and pharmacy leaders.
The visit comes on the heels of the announcement by the Governing Council of KNUST appointing Prof. Agyare as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University. He is expected to officially assume office on 1st August 2026, succeeding Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure ends on 31st July.
For the pharmacy profession, the appointment represents more than a leadership transition at one of Africa’s leading universities. It is being viewed as a powerful affirmation of the growing influence of pharmacists in academia, research, institutional leadership, and national development.
A Proud moment for Pharmacy
Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Owusu Donkor congratulated Prof. Agyare on behalf of pharmacists across Ghana and commended his distinguished contributions to pharmaceutical education, research, leadership, and professional development. He noted that Prof. Agyare’s appointment was a source of immense pride for the profession and reflected decades of dedication, scholarship, and service. The PSGH President described him as one of the profession’s most accomplished academic leaders.
Among his many achievements, Prof. Agyare was recently recognised as the Academic Pharmacist of the Year at the maiden Pharma Excellence Awards, a testament to his outstanding impact on pharmaceutical education, research, mentorship, and academic leadership.
“Your appointment demonstrates what is possible when excellence, hard work, integrity, and visionary leadership come together. It is a proud moment not only for KNUST but for pharmacists across Ghana and beyond,” Dr. Owusu Donkor remarked.

Invitation to the Prof. N.A. Tackie Pharmacy Education Forum
As part of the visit, the PSGH leadership formally invited Prof. Agyare to the upcoming Prof. N.A. Tackie Pharmacy(Rx) Education Forum and Gala Night, one of the flagship events of the Society’s 90th anniversary celebrations. Scheduled for 26th June 2026 at the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall at the Manhyia Palace, the forum will bring together pharmacy educators, researchers, practitioners, regulators, students, and policymakers to discuss the future of pharmacy education in Ghana and beyond.
Named in honour of Prof. Albert Nee Tackie, the first Ghanaian Dean of the first Faculty of Pharmacy in Ghana, the event seeks to stimulate critical conversations on preparing the profession for emerging healthcare challenges and opportunities. The PSGH leadership emphasized that Prof. Agyare’s presence at the forum would be particularly significant given his distinguished career in academia and his longstanding contributions to pharmaceutical education and research.
In his response, Prof. Agyare expressed appreciation to the PSGH leadership for the visit and for the confidence and goodwill extended to him by the profession. He thanked the Society for its continued support and acknowledged the important role pharmacists have played in his professional journey. He also reaffirmed his commitment to excellence, leadership, innovation, and service as he prepares to assume the highest office of the University.
