Accra, Ghana — On Monday 19th January 2026, the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH), led by its President, Pharm Paul Owusu Donkor, PhD, paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, in a historic engagement that highlights growing collaboration between academia and professional pharmacy practice in Ghana.
The visit was facilitated by the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy, Prof. Irene M. A. Kretchy, who formally introduced the PSGH President to the Vice-Chancellor. The meeting was particularly symbolic, as Dr. Donkor becomes the first faculty member of the University of Ghana to be elected President of the PSGH, and notably, the youngest President in the Society’s history. The milestone mirrors another historic achievement, with Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo serving as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana.
The PSGH delegation included the Executive Secretary, Rev. Dr. Dennis Sena Awitty; Deputy Executive Secretary, Dr. (Pharm) Harry Amoaning Okyere; Hon. Treasurer, Pharm. Anna Naa Kwarley Quartey, PhD; Immediate Past Vice President of PSGH and Chairperson of the PSGH 90th Anniversary Celebrations, Pharm. Kwabena Offei Asante; Chairperson of the Executive Coordination & Monitoring Committee, Pharm. Robert Kpakpo; and Member of the International Partnerships Committee, Dr. (Pharm) Maame Araba Wose Amfo.

From the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy (UGSOP), the delegation comprised Heads of Department, Prof. Emelia Oppong Bekoe (Pharmacology and Toxicology); Prof. Grace Lovia Allotey-Babington (Pharmaceutics and Microbiology); Dr. Thelma Ohene-Agyei (Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Pharmacy); Dr. Nana Ama Mireku-Gyimah (Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine); Mahmood Brobbey Oppong (Pharmaceutical Chemistry), and Mrs. Mavis Osafo-Adu, Administrator of the School.
The engagement explored strategic opportunities for collaboration. Of particular interest was the proposal for the University of Ghana campus to host the 2026 PSGH Annual General Meeting (AGM), an event expected to climax the Society’s 90th Anniversary celebrations. The President of PSGH also used the occasion to call for stronger institutional collaboration between the University and the Society, especially in research, joint projects, and initiatives that advance pharmacy practice and public health outcomes.
Congratulating Dr. Donkor on his election, Prof. Amfo noted that his ascension to the presidency of the PSGH projects the University of Ghana onto the national professional stage. She encouraged him to work diligently to deliver on his campaign promises and assured the delegation of the University’s readiness to collaborate with the PSGH, beginning with hosting the 2026 AGM and the 90th anniversary celebrations.
