
The Governing Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has appointed Professor Christian Agyare as the next Vice-Chancellor of the university, marking a historic and proud moment for the pharmacy profession and the wider academic community in Ghana.
Prof. Agyare, an astute academic, accomplished researcher, administrator, and Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, will officially assume office on 1 August 2026, succeeding Professor Rita Akosua Dickson whose tenure ends on 31 July.
The announcement, confirmed during a Governing Council meeting on Wednesday morning, comes after an intense search process for a leader capable of steering Ghana’s premier science and technology university into its next phase of growth, innovation, and global relevance.
A Pharmacist-Scholar at the helm
For many within the pharmacy fraternity, Prof. Agyare’s appointment is both symbolic and inspiring. A distinguished pharmaceutical scientist and academic leader, he has built an enviable career defined by scholarly excellence, institutional service, and visionary leadership.
Currently serving as Provost of the College of Health Sciences at KNUST, a role he has occupied since 2020, Prof. Agyare was elevated to the position of Senior Most Provost in 2024, reflecting the confidence the university community has consistently reposed in his leadership.
His ascent to the highest office of the university is seen by many as a testament to the growing influence of pharmacists in national development, academia, research, and public leadership.
Strong administrative pedigree
Prof. Agyare enters the Vice-Chancellorship with extensive executive and governance experience spanning over two decades.
His administrative portfolio includes serving as:
- Head of the Quality Assurance and Planning Unit of KNUST (2016–2020)
- Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (2019–2020)
- Longest-serving member of the Academic Board with continuous service since 2014
Over the years, he has also played critical roles on several of the university’s key statutory and decision-making bodies, including the Executive Committee, Planning and Resources Committee, University Appointments Committee, Welfare Services Board, and Academic Board.

- Research Associate at the Centre for Discovery and Innovation in Parasitic Diseases, Department of Pathology, University of California San Francisco
- Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research
He has also contributed significantly to teaching, mentorship, curriculum development, and postgraduate training within and beyond Ghana.

A Fellow of both the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and the Ghana College of Pharmacists, he represents a generation of pharmacist-leaders redefining the boundaries of the profession.
His professional journey began with internship training at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and community pharmacy practice at Rhemapharma Ltd before rising through academia to become one of Ghana’s most respected pharmaceutical scientists.
