Accra, Ghana — June 9, 2025
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the brutal murder of Pharmacist Mohammed Zia-ulhak Zibrim, a respected healthcare professional and General Secretary of the PSGH Upper East Regional Branch. The tragic incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, June 5, 2025, when Zibrim was gunned down in cold blood in front of his residence in Bolgatanga, shortly after returning from work.
In the statement signed by PSGH President, Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh, the Society expressed profound sorrow and outrage at what it described as a “heinous and barbaric act” that has robbed the pharmacy profession and the nation of a young, vibrant, and dedicated servant of public health. Zibrim was also the CEO of Zimax Pharmacy, a reputable community pharmacy in the region.
What makes the tragedy even more troubling is the growing suspicion that this killing may be linked to the long-standing Bawku conflict. Zibrim, who was known for his peace-loving nature and unique heritage—having both Mamprusi and Kusasi roots—was widely seen as a symbol of unity in a deeply polarized environment. His murder has therefore not only sparked national grief but also heightened calls for peace and justice in the region.
The PSGH is urging the Ghana Police Service and national security agencies to expedite investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay. The statement further appeals to the government to redouble its efforts in restoring peace to Bawku and its surrounding areas, emphasizing that “the needless shedding of innocent blood must come to an end.”
Additionally, the Society is calling for increased protection for healthcare workers, especially community pharmacists who often work late into the night in vulnerable areas. The PSGH has specifically requested police presence and security support for members of its Upper East Regional Branch during this period of mourning and investigation.
Pharmacist Zibrim leaves behind his wife, four children, and aged parents. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the health sector and the broader Ghanaian public, with many expressing their grief and anger on social media and in community vigils.

Background
Multiple media outlets have reported on the killing, which occurred under circumstances that have raised fears of politically or ethnically motivated violence. According to reports, the late pharmacist was shot multiple times in his vehicle near his residence. The Mamprugu Youth Association has since condemned the act, describing it as an “inhumane and cowardly killing” and calling for national attention to the escalating insecurity in the Upper East Region.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in Bawku, a town that has seen cyclical conflict often rooted in chieftaincy disputes and ethnic tensions. Despite repeated interventions, violence continues to destabilize the region, making professionals like Zibrim vulnerable targets.
As investigations continue, the PSGH and the entire pharmacy fraternity in Ghana are united in mourning—and in their demand for swift action for justice.
