The 2025 Mid-Year Conference (MYC) of the Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation of Ghana (PSF-Gh) took place on Saturday, March 8, 2025, bringing together pharmacy students nationwide and key stakeholders in the profession. The event, under the theme “Empowering future pharmacists; an intentional step towards personal and professional growth” was chaired by Pharm. Dr. Raymond Tetteh, Acting Dean of the Central University School of Pharmacy, with President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Pharm. Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh, as the keynote speaker.

In his keynote address, Pharm. Dr. Donkoh shared his personal journey, reflecting on the uncertainties he faced in secondary school and his eventual decision to pursue pharmacy—a profession that guarantees lifelong employability and impact. He urged students to be strategic, proactive, and innovative in carving out their professional paths, stressing that success requires intentional steps toward growth.

Distinguished guests inspire future pharmacists

The event was graced by several distinguished personalities, including the Chairperson of the Community Practice Pharmacists Association (CPPA), Pharm. Dr. Emmanuel Ireland, the Hon. Treasurer of PSGH, Pharm. Dr. Naana Aboagye Asare, and Pharm. Dr. Brenda Oppong, alongside a host of seasoned pharmacists from various practice areas. Their presence provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with experienced professionals, gain valuable insights into different pharmacy career paths, and be inspired by the wealth of knowledge and expertise shared. The dignitaries commended the students for their enthusiasm and encouraged them to embrace continuous learning, professional ethics, and leadership in shaping the future of pharmacy in Ghana.

Becoming experts and pioneers in pharmacy

The PSGH President emphasized the need for young pharmacists to specialize and be experts in their chosen fields. Whether in industrial pharmacy, regulatory affairs, IT-driven pharmacy solutions, or health insurance, he encouraged students to apply themselves diligently and continuously seek mentorship and professional development.

“Specialization doesn’t necessarily mean going back to school—it can be through short courses, self-study, or hands-on experience,” he advised, adding that pharmacists must also develop strong soft skills such as emotional intelligence, adaptability, and leadership to stand out in areas like patient care and management.

A call to leadership and ethical Practice

Pharm. Dr. Donkoh challenged students to create opportunities rather than wait for them, urging them to be decision-makers, communicators, lifelong learners, and agents of positive change—qualities that define the 11-star pharmacist. He emphasized that the pharmacy profession is not just about financial gain but about impact and ethical practice, reminding students to uphold honesty, patient confidentiality, and professional integrity at all times.

Balancing success and well-being

Acknowledging the pressures of the profession, he advised students on maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life, stating that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. He encouraged them to prioritize personal development, well-being, and meaningful relationships, as success is not just about achievements but also about overall health and happiness.

Building the Future of Pharmacy

The conference provided pharmacy students with insightful presentations, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for future leadership. The PSGH President’s address was a powerful call to action, inspiring students to take control of their careers, uphold ethical values, and shape the future of pharmacy in Ghana.

As the event concluded, one message stood out:
“The choice is yours—will you wait for opportunities, or will you create them?”

The PSF-Gh honored the president of PSGH with a citation of appreciation in recognition of his exemplary leadership, unwavering dedication to the growth and development of the federation, and his commitment to mentoring students and young pharmacists.
