The President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Pharm. Samuel Know Donkoh has proposed an “eleven-star pharmacist” concept to include “pharmacists as experts in digital health” in the versatile and expanding roles of the pharmacist.

He made this pronouncement at the launch of the 11th Symposium of the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF) held in Accra on Monday 17th July 2023. As the keynote speaker, the president was speaking on the theme ““Evolution of pharmacy practice: Innovation and capacity building”.

According to President Donkoh, the “ten-star pharmacist” concept includes ten roles such as a caregiver, a decision-maker, a communicator, a manager, a life-long-learner, a teacher, a leader, a researcher, an entrepreneur and an agent of positive change.

Ladies and gentlemen, I dare to propose an “eleven-star pharmacist concept”, which includes the pharmacist as an expert in digital health. As AI continues to advance, it is essential for pharmacists to stay updated, adapt to new technologies, and actively participate in shaping AI applications in pharmacy practice”,

The president then took the opportunity to admonish students and young pharmacists to pursue higher learning in specialized areas and to consider careers in emerging or non-traditional practice areas.
